Computer Motherboards
A
motherboard is the central or primary circuit board of a modern computer. It
is also known as a system board or logic board. Most
motherboards produced today are designed for PC-compatible computers. The
basic purpose of the motherboard is to provide the electrical and logical
connections for the other components of the system to communicate. A desktop
computer is built with a
CPU,
graphics video card,
sound card,
hard disk controller,
memory (RAM),
and other essential components on the motherboard. Other components such as
external storage, controllers for video display and sound, and peripheral
devices are connected to the motherboard via edge connectors and
cables, although in it is increasingly common to integrate these
"peripherals" into the motherboard.

The industry boasts an incredible variety of motherboard manufacturers and
models, and each motherboard is compatible with either a specific Intel or AMD
